Light and Land

Landscape photography… It’s where many photographers (myself included) begin their photographic journey, and where some excel to artistic perfection. We love photographing landscapes because they can be practiced and perfected in solitude, captured while touring foreign lands, or quite simply make for gorgeous photographic art and reflection.

As you learn to photograph beautiful landscapes, certain challenges arise in bringing forth your photographic vision. While readily available as photographic subjects, landscape photos don’t always translate as beautifully on screen/print as they do in the light of the real world. Light and Land – Landscapes in the Digital Darkroom, a brand new eBook by renowned landscape photographer, Michael Frye, shows landscape photography enthusiasts how to clarify their vision AND how to translate that vision through post-processing techniques specifically for landscape photography.

My Thoughts on the Content…

In a word… WOW! Like many photographers, landscapes are where I first started to practice photography and are still one of my most favourite subjects to shoot. I love capturing the natural beauty found in nature, but like many photographers (at all levels I might add…), I have always found it challenging to make my photos look as realistic and vibrant as the actual scene in front of me. Even with greatly composed photos, there is a great degree of difficulty in post-processing them to accurately evoke the emotion or mood I am attempting to covey. This book shows you exactly how to do that!

Light and Land walks step-by-step through the processing of 5 images, and really demonstrates how to bring the perfect balance to landscape photos through applying the right amount of saturation, dodging and burning techniques to draw the eye into the image, and how contrast and color temperature create strength in your images that your viewers will connect with. The step-by-step examples are extremely easy to follow and apply to your own photography, and will provide an instant boost in the finished quality of your photos. In my opinion, this book will really give your photography an advantage.

The examples and techniques are demonstrated in Lightroom, but are equally applicable to Aperture, ACR, Photoshop, etc…
