Here’s a great little plug-in from Reindeer Graphics entitled “Select Edges.” What this one does, is allows you to select the edge details in your image for sharpening with the Unsharp Mask filter in Photoshop, without getting sharpening halos in your images. You can also achieve outstanding skin smoothing by running this plugin in “Fine Detail” mode, then inverting the selection (Select>Inverse) and running either a Gaussian Blur or a Surface Blur.
