Two weeks ago, I started to share some of my favourite photography related blogs which I enjoy frequenting. I realize everyone’s time is tight these days (as is mine!), so I’m going to be continuing my favourite blogs series by sharing one to two blogs weekly with you. That being said, the next on my favourite blogs list is PhotographyBLOG.
PhotographyBLOG is run by professional photographer Mark Goldstein (a really wonderful gentleman by the way) who also contributes regularly to the popular UK magazine Digital Camera Buyer. PhotographyBLOG is the UK’s leading photography website, offering a sweet daily dose of the latest news in the photography industry, photo contests and competitions, the newest photography gear and firmware updates, related software news, and so much more.
If you would like to keep up to date with the latest photo industry news, I highly suggest adding PhotographyBLOG to your daily reading list, adding their RSS feed to your feed-readers, or subscribing via email updates. You’ll “be in the know” with a quick headline scan, or by expanding the full story for those you wish to read more in depth. PhotographyBLOG also does their own non-biased product reviews which I always find to be insightful when making a decision about buying new gear.
Next up in my photo-blog favs series is from a good friend and magazine contributor, Jason Anderson. Canon Blogger has quickly grown into one of the best resources for the new (and existing) photographer. Why do I say that? That’s because Jason has put together a fantastic podcast entitled, “Learning Digital Photography” via Personal Life Media. Before I get into details, there’s something I should mention quickly. Although Jason shoots with Canon and the blog is called Canon Blogger, this site is not exclusive to Canon enthusiasts. In fact, I can’t remember a post that was directed specifically to a Canon shooter, that any other photographer wouldn’t benefit from. In addition, although the podcast is called “Learning Digital Photography,” this site caters to a much broader audience than just beginner photographers.
Jason writes primarily for our column in the PhotographyBB Online Magazine entitled “Photographic Food for Thought,” because it’s just that – photographic considerations and issues concerning photographers on a multitude of levels. Take for instance, file management and backup strategy, how to create more compelling photos, the perils and pitfalls of photo contests, and much more; Jason writes with intelligence on the issues that concern all of us. The podcast is just another excellent way of staying in tune with the photography industry, some great interviews, product reviews, tips, and much more. Listen to it on your iPod/iPhone, in the car, while you work… any way you do it, you’ll find the experience enriching.
Canon Blogger also features several challenges and contests with some great giveaways through their Flickr site too. What better way to participate whether you are a beginner or pro, than to get involved with your peers and join in the fun. Shooting to a theme is one of the best ways a photographer can push their boundaries and actually improve, so I highly recommend checking out some of the contests that Jason runs.
Welcome back to the second in the series of my favourite photography blogs. The next site I’d like to recommend is from another friend of mine (and PhotographyBB), Mike Frye. PhotoCapM – Thoughts on Photographic Art is on my list as one of the most positive blog experiences I could recommend. Mike does some wonderful writing on subjects pertaining to photography, his experiences with photography, and photographic art. I always find the articles to be intelligent AND upbeat, which is the perfect recipe for presenting any material in my opinion. In addition to Mike’s articles on worthy photographic news stories, this blog also contains many helpful tips that Mike has learned throughout his journey as a photographer. The beginners will learn a lot from these helpful tips, while the pros will gain great insight from Mike’s articles on photography as it relates to art.
In addition to all of this, Mike is a social networking guru who uses his power for good. He maintains a highly active Flickr, RedBubble, Facebook, and Twitter account, always connecting with positive, like-minded photo enthusiasts. They say that this world is what you make of it, and Mike truly makes the best of what social networking was born to be. On the PhotoCapM blog Mike runs a unique series entitled, “Flickrite in the Spotlight” where one Flickr user is featured through their work, their contributions to photography, interview, and art. This is one of the reasons I always visit the blog; to learn more about what our peers are doing, and how they are doing it. We’re all growing together on this journey and it’s great to see the recognition of inspiring work from other fellow enthusiasts. Another excellent feature of the PhotoCapM Blog is the Photo Assignments and Contests category, where you’ll find helpful articles on participating in photo assignments/contests as well as links to some great contests open to all levels of photographers.
If you haven’t seen the common theme yet, it’s about to get more clear. The PhotoCapM Blog is all about giving back either through recognition, learning, and also charity. Mike’s Heart Art is an opportunity to embrace our love for photography and give back to those in need. You can find more details here on how you can help.
You’ll also want to stay tuned to the January Issue of the PhotographyBB Online Magazine where Mike has been kind enough to contribute an article for us. Be sure to check out the PhotoCapM Blog and add this one to your RSS feeds folks! If you would like to connect with a Mike, you can connect with him via any of the following links: Twitter, Flickr, RedBubble, Facebook
This week, I’d like to do something a little bit different. We’re going to be looking at some of my favourite photography blogs which I do my best to visit daily. Hopefully the blogs I show you over the next few days will inspire you to add them to your bookmarks, daily visits, and/or RSS feeds.
The first in this series is “The Way I See It” over at The Celtic Camera, operated by one of our PhotographyBB Magazine contributing authors – Gareth Glynn Ash. Gareth is a talented professional photographer with a specialty in concert photography, and has shot several photos for various bands including CD cover shots for The Sandcarvers. Gareth also enjoys shooting panoramics, HDRs, some brilliant still life photos and a whole lot more.
What makes The Way I See It one of my favourite blogs is that it’s one of those great daily blogs to visit. I’m presented with a stunning daily photo to check out along with the camera settings which were used to take the photo (an invaluable way of helping all of us to grow as photographers). Each photo is suitably and creatively named (which is an important and often overlooked consideration as a photographer), and comes with a short and simple explanation of the shot which I find always adds value to the image.
Another reason why I visit this blog daily is not only for the photo and learning experience. Art comes in many forms, and Gareth always compliments each daily photo with a “Listening To” status update, linking you to a different music track daily too. Usually I’m not one to click on these updates, but thankfully I did on this blog and as a result, I do so more frequently now thanks to the wonderful selections Gareth provides. If you’re one of the many busy folks out there who don’t have a whole lot of time on their hands to read daily blogs, I highly recommend you to add this one to your feeds. The Way I See It is a positive force, and the perfect blog to wake up to.
You can learn more about Gareth Glynn Ash and his website here, along with the professional services he provides. If you’re on Twitter, you can follow Gareth here.
If you haven’t already seen it yet, this tongue-in-cheek rap music video shows just how passionate we all are when it comes to our brand choices in digital SLRs. Even if the music is (or isn’t) your cup of tea, you have to admire the amount of work and thought that went into this one. And if you are a Pentax shooter like myself, that last line in the song will sting a little! Here’s the video (via YouTube) for you:
Here is one really cool video brought to our attention by one of our forum members (thanks TomB for showing us this!). Shown in this video is a stop-motion animation created from 1300 photo prints, which is truly an amazing (albeit expensive!) feat. What a creative use of digital photography – enjoy!
I recently made a post on Twitter about the photographer’s new best friend being the Apple iPod. As photographers, most of us lead busy lives both in and outside of photography. Additionally, with all of the new camera technologies, accessories, and software (not to mention learning post processing techniques) learning more and staying up to date can be a daunting task all on its own.
Enter your new best friend – the iPod. Did you know that there are loads of excellent video and audio photography, Photoshop, and Lightroom podcasts available (free) for download? The video podcasts are great instead of watching TV, and the audio podcasts can be listened to in the car, at work, or when you’re out getting excercise!
I’ve been asked by several members if I could recommend some good photography podcasts, so here is a brief list of my favourite photography podcasts: Read more…
As artistic photographers, we all appreciate art in its many forms. Along with photography, what better form of art is there than music! As seen in our recent Anniversary Issue of the PhotographyBB Magazine Online, our good friend and author Gareth Glynn Ash contributed an excellent article on how to take better concert photos. Gareth featured some great photos of The Sandcarvers, a band with which Gareth has a close connection to (his wife is a member of this smokin band). The Sandcarvers will be celebrating the release of their latest CD on March 13th, 2009 entitled “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” at Shank Hall, Milwaukee, WI. Read on for some free tracks off the new CD (highly recommended!) and more information on the release party. Read more…
If you want to check out some really extreme photography, then check out this website for a brief slideshow of some really amazing photos. You’ll see our planet in ways you may never have seen it before, along with some spectacular shots of the space shuttle and the astronauts high above the Earth. Special thanks to our forum moderator Nobby for sharing this link with our members.
