Due to the overwhelming positive responses I’ve been receiving, along with the many requests for an extension on this contest, we’ve decided to run this contest for one additional month. At PhotographyBB, we firmly believe in a life long learning process, hence the decision to extend this contest! If you are not familiar with the contest yet, here’s how it goes:
Beginners are free to ask any photography or image processing related questions they have on their mind, and our more experienced members (”experts”) are free to add their responses to the questions. At the end of the new deadline (April 5th, 2010), we’ll be picking one beginner question, and one “expert” answer to receive a prize pack each! Here are the details and rules one more time:
Beginners: Ask Your Questions!
We want all of the great folks who are just getting started with photography, digital SLR cameras, and image processing to put on your thinking caps and ask any question you may have burning inside you. There are 3 categories for you to post your questions in, and they MUST follow a specific format (see the brief “Rules” section for details).
The categories are:
Beginner’s Rules:
- All questions must be submitted in the CORRECT category in the PhotographyBB Forums. If you are not yet a forum member, registration is extremely fast and free. Any questions submitted into the wrong category will be eliminated.
- When posting a question, the SUBJECT line of your posting must be related to your question. For example, we will not accept subject lines that read, “I need help!”. An example of an appropriate subject line would be, “What is Manual Mode?” If your question is a long one (which is great) please title the subject line appropriately so the “experts” can have some idea what the posted question will be regarding.
- Maximum of 5 questions per person.
- Contest period runs from Feb 5th to March 5th, 2010.
Experts: Share Your Knowledge!
To all of our more experienced members and those of you who enjoy sharing knowledge and helping others, we haven’t forgotten you! We want you to post your answers to the beginners’ questions, and since we want to encourage your participation you may answer as many questions as you can. There are some rules for our expert submissions too, namely:
- You may answer as many questions as you would like to, however, the most thorough and easy to understand responses will be most likely to win our “experts” prize package.
- If a response to a question has already been posted, you are still free to add to the reply. Once we feel that the question has been answered appropriately and thoroughly, the thread will be locked.
That’s really all there is to it folks! Once again, we will have 2 prize packages, one for the beginners and one for the experts. The winner of the beginners contest will receive Scott Kelby’s “The Digital Photography Book” volumes 1 through 3. The winner of the experts contest will receive a copy of “VisionMongers” by David duChemin. Both groups will also receive our entire collection of Premium Photoshop Actions. There will be some additional prizes to be added, which we will reveal shortly! Check out the categories, have fun asking and answering questions, and in the process we’ll be helping the whole photography community!

It’s been a short break from our usual biweekly assignments, but our photography assignments are back! What are the photo assignments all about? Our photography assignments are engineered to challenge our members by having you shoot photos based on a given theme. The themes are designed to inspire and help photographers break out of their shells, and push the boundaries of your creativity and photography, thus making us all better photographers in the process. Assignments are open to everyone, you must simply be a member of the PhotographyBB Forums. If you are not yet a member, please consider joining and participating in the fun – it’s free afterall!
Your assignment theme is: Long Exposure (1-second or longer).
That’s right! We want to see what you can come up with, given the theme above. Your exposure must be longer than 1-second (up to any length), so think hard about all of the things you can capture given the parameters of having a long exposure. Tip: A long exposure doesn’t necessarily have to capture motion in the photo. As with all challenges, you may submit up to 3 photos, and photos MUST be taken during the assignment time window (Feb 17th – Mar 3rd, 2010). Top choices will be selected and published in an upcoming issue of the PhotographyBB Online Magazine.
Entries must be submitted here. Click to view and/or submit your photo.
Be creative, have fun, and happy photographing!

Welcome back to the next round in our new year of contests and challenges folks. This particular contest should be an interesting one as we face off the beginners against the experts. Since we believe in life-long learning at PhotographyBB, we want to reward those who seek knowledge, as well as those who are kind enough to mentor and/or provide knowledge.
For some time now, we’ve had great success with our “No Stupid Questions” room in the PhotographyBB Forums. Here, beginners can feel free to post any photography related question they’ve had on their minds, and receive an answer from one of our more experienced members. It’s worked great and we’ve helped many people who may have otherwise been too shy to ask their question… until now…. We have a lovely prize package for one lucky “beginner” as well as one lucky “expert.” So here’s how this is going to work:

Hello PhotographyBB’ers! I would like to quickly address something which may not have been clear with the current photo assignment entitled: A Thousand Words, A Single Frame.
It has been brought to my attention that some of the entries into our current Photography Assignment/Challenge (1000 Words, A Single Frame), do not qualify for the assignment, due to the images having been shot outside the assignment time frame. This may not have been 100% clear, although the assignment timeframe window was meant to imply that photo submissions must be shot during that time. So, just to clear things up: ALL entries to the assignment/contest must have been photographed DURING the assignment window (Jan 4th to Jan 31st, 2010). Remember, the purpose of these assignments is to get our members to go out and shoot with the theme in mind, rather than combing through old photos for a suitable entry. Plus we’ve got a really cool prize for the winner this time around, and we want to make sure that everyone qualifies for it.
That all being said, I will happily accept additional entries from those of you who submitted older photos, but please delete your previous entries yourselves (you can delete your post by clicking on the little “x” at the top right of your post within the forum thread. That will be a huge help to the moderation team, and will prevent any possibility of your photo being disqualified from entry. I appreciate everyone’s help in keeping this contest both fun and fair! There’s still plenty of time to enter shots, and thank you to all of you who are (or plan on) participating. Have fun and happy photographing!
Check out some of the fantastic entries so far here.

Happy 2010 folks! To kick off the New Year just right, we have a special announcement. Many of you participate in our bi-weekly photography assignments, but this month we are doing something exciting: Our first photography assignment of the year will also come with a special prize for our top photo entry. Best selling author and photographer David duChemin has generously donated a signed copy of his books, Within The Frame and VisionMongers, as a prize for the winner of this challenge.
David duChemin is successful as an author because he teaches us about Vision. He is successful as a photographer because his photographs perfectly demonstrate the age-old adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” and his photos do just that – they tell a story. Therefore, in keeping with the theme of David’s books, and the secret to his success, our theme for this photo contest is: A Thousand Words, A Single Frame
It will be your job to submit photos which tell a story in a single frame. Think carefully about your main subjects and how they relate to their surroundings. Consider everything we’ve learned thus far in our assignments and the magazine tutorials, and create for us a compelling photograph which really tells a story. As a special treat for our participants, David duChemin has graciously agreed to be the judge to select the winning photo! This contest/assignment is open from now until January 31st, 2010. Participants may submit a total of 2 photos for this contest, and all images must be submitted through our forums in this thread.
Put your thinking caps on, take your time, wait for the perfect moment, and have fun with this assignment. Remember, you may submit up to 2 entries in total before January 31st, 2010.
To submit a photo you must be a registered member of the PhotographyBB Forums. If you are not currently a member, please register here to submit your photos. Registration is completely free, and you’ll become part of the wonderful community of photo-enthusiasts we have in our membership. Entry into this contest grants PhotographyBB the rights to publish your image on our blog and in a future issue of the PhotographyBB Online Magazine. The top 3 photos will be published and the photographer of the winning image will receive a signed copy of David duChemin’s Within the Frame and VisionMongers. Have fun, and happy photographing!

We are going to be running a very special feature in our upcoming Decemeber 2009 edition of the PhotographyBB Online Magazine. Since it’s Christmastime where many places and cultures celebrate differently, we would like to showcase this in the upcoming edition of our magazine.
Theme: Christmas Around The World
We’re doing this one a little bit differently, there will be some submission requirements here as we will be making a selection of images from this challenge to be used in the Dec 2009 online magazine. Please only submit photos which you are volunteering to be potentially published in our online magazine (as with all of our assignments!).
Requirements:
- Photo MUST be sized to (at least) 1024 pixels along it’s longest edge (We can use the largest size you have posted here).
- If you would like to have your name published along with the image, please include your first and last name. (otherwise we’ll use your Flickr account name)
- A title for your image
- Include a brief paragraph description of where your photo was taken, including any of your comments on what the photo is all about. (ie. festivities, decorations, traditions, food, etc…)
Four simple requirements! Also, if you are able to provide any EXIF data such as Shutter Speed / Aperture / IS0 / Camera model then that would be great too.
Since many folks like to travel to visit family around the holidays, I realize you may have photos from previous Christmas seasons (and locations) which you would like to share. For this “assignment”, we hope you are able to take new photos, but due to the limited time window (plus we want to see the world here too!), we WILL accept photos taken from previous Christmas seasons.
Photos can be submitted here:

Deadline is Dec 17th, 2009. Happy Photographing!

Welcome back to your latest photo assignment. Remember, the whole purpose of these assignments is to get our members thinking outside of their regular comfort zones, which will ultimately help us all improving in all aspects of our photography (plus it’s fun!). The theme for this assignment comes from a suggestion by our good friend (and forum moderator extraordinaire!), Nobby, so many thanks for this excellent suggestion!
Your assignment theme is: Concentricity
For those of you who are thinking “Hmm… I better look this one up to be sure…” here is the definition: “Concentricity: Having a common center or center point, as of (concentric) circles or other shapes.” This assignment should prove to be challenging (which is the point!), so put your thinking caps on, grab your gear, and get to shooting! As with all of the assignments, we ask that you only submit entries which have been photographed during the assignment window (Nov 26th to Dec 10th, 2009), and you may submit up to 3 photos per assignment. The top choices by our editorial team will also be selected and published in a future issue of the PhotographyBB Online Magazine.

Song Title: Beat It! by Michael Jackson
It’s time for another fun photography assignment folks. Photo assignments are done bi-weekly in our forums, and are designed to help our members improve their photographic skills both technically and creatively. This one should be particularly fun, since the challenge is wide open on this one.
The theme for our 27th Photo Assignment is: Song Titles
That’s right folks! Pick any title from any song and shoot a photo that best represents the song title. Post your image (along with the title of the song you are shooting) in our forums to enter the assignment/challenge. You may submit up to 3 entries per assignment, and in this case, your 3 entries can be of different song titles. Photo submissions to the assignments must be taken during the assignment window (Nov 3rd to Nov 18th, 2009). So no going through your archives – the purpose of the assignments is to give you a creative or technical task to shoot! The top 3 photos for this challenge will also be published in a future issue of the PhotographyBB Online Magazine!
Entries are to be submitted here in our forums.
Have fun grooving and shooting this challenge!
Those beautiful Autumn colours are just making their way out, and it’s time for you to grab your camera and take the best photo you can which depicts our theme of: Autumn
Seasons are a great photo theme to work with because you must challenge yourself not only to capture the spirit of the theme, but to also try to capture an image which stands out from the crowd. Autumn brings about a time of change not only in the colour of the leaves, what other changes can you find?
This assignment runs from Oct 1st, 2009 through Oct 14th, 2009. All submissions are to be made here in our forums. Participants may submit up to 3 photos per assignment, and all photographs must have been taken during the assignment time window. The top 3 photos from our assignment challenge will be selected and published in an upcoming issue of the PhotographyBB Online Magazine.
Have fun with the assignment, and show us your best Autumn photo… Happy Photographing!
We’re onto the next assignment folks, which I am hoping will prove to be one of the most interesting as well as challenging assignments we’ve had to date. Photography is all about capturing a single moment in time, visually. However, we are all aware of how one of our senses can activate another, or even evoke an emotion or memory. Your task for the following assignment is to photograph: Sound
Remember, the purpose of these assignments is to provide you with a theme to assist in breaking out of our photographic shells and to inspire creativity. With that in mind, take your cameras out and come up with the most interesting shot that represents our given theme.
Entries are to be posted here in our forums. Remember, you may submit up to 3 images per assignment/challenge, and the top 3 photos entries will be published in the PhotographyBB Magazine. This assignment runs from now through to September 30th, 2009 and all photo entries must have been taken during the challenge time period. Happy Photographing!
